The contest was to use five words they provided in a short poem. If I remember correctly, they were skyscraper, concrete, lavender, robust, and detritus. I can’t say I love the poem, but it only took a couple of minutes and it was a good exercise.
I have to say, there were some miscommunications along the way. I ended up with the feeling that I was interacting more with a bureaucracy than human beings. Though it would have been the easiest thing in the world for Alexie to say a kind word or offer some personal interaction, those things never materialized. Ah well, it’s not like that poem was my baby or anything; I didn’t have anything invested in it. It’s probably best to think of it as interacting with a publisher and not have any expectations to begin with. That being said, I still like what he stands for most of the time, so I’m happy to link to his blog.
